Swift coordination and exemplary time management between Clinicians, Medical Social Workers, Traffic & Police authorities and Nursing Teams between Pune and Mumbai, enabled a life-saving heart transplant on a 32yr old male. Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, bestowed the recipient with a new life when the parents of a 24yr old male consented to donate their son’s organs, after he was pronounced brain dead at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune.
The young 24yr old donor, who ran a Tea stall, was rushed to the Pune hospital after suffering head injuries in a road traffic accident. In spite of the best efforts by the medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced brain dead. The parents, who worked as daily wage labourers, were counselled by Medical Social Workers, after which the parents consented to donate his Heart, Liver, Pancreas, Kidneys and Corneas; saving and enriching the lives of at least seven patients of end-stage organ failure.
The donor heart was retrieved by Dr AnvayMulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, which was then transported to Mumbai via a roadway Green Corridor, to be transplanted in to a 32yr old male from Mira Road who had recently been diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The patient was being treated at a local hospital since October 19th and was subsequently waitlisted earlier this week.
