According to experts from MaxCure, rheumatic fever is a condition which affects children between 5-15 years of age. Young women who have this condition will have problems during pregnancy and afterwards. Dr. Krishna Prasad, chief cardiovascular thoracic surgeon and director, MaxCure Hospitals, said, “Rheumatic fever is manifested as fleeting joint pains in children. Generally prolonged rheumatic fever for 5 – 10 years reaches heart and affects heart valves leading to damaged heart, if not treated can lead to heart failure.”

The main symptoms of young girls contracting with rheumatic fever include a simple sore throat with pain or discomfort in the throat. This is often seen in children as part of cold. But, it can lead to tonsillitis and can further cause rheumatic fever. This infection is usually caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. While explaining further about the rheumatic heart disease, Reddy said that though this disease is a common heart condition and can be prevented easily, because of lack of awareness many small children particularly the girls are dying due to this disease.

Every month about 300 – 400 such heart operations are happening only in two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Particularly young girl children are more prone to this disease. But because lack of awareness and neglect this ailment is spreading rapidly in children among the lower and upper middle class society in the country.

Hrudaya Spandana Foundation is a dedicated heart health charity organization focused on delivering quality and fast-track heart treatment to patients from the lower sections and increases their chances of survival.
