Medtronic Gets FDA Clearance for MiniMed Connect
Medtronic Plc. (MDT) received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for MiniMed Connect, its device for diabetic patients to monitor glucose levels through a smartphone app.
MiniMed Connect allows diabetics to view their insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor data on a smartphone, the company said, and enables remote monitoring and text message notifications. Medtronic said the device, which fits on a keychain or in a pocket, also provides doctors with data so that they can adjust care plans.
The related smartphone app will initially be available with iOS devices. Medtronic said it is working with Samsung Electronics to develop an app for Samsung mobile devices.
The device is compatible with Medtronic’s MiniMed 530G and Revel systems, and is expected to be available in the fall.
Separately, Medtronic announced an agreement with diabetes data collector Glooko to make data from Medtronic pumps and glucose monitors available on the Glooko diabetes management platform.
